Vintage Soviet Carp Family Fish, Set of 3, Porcelain Fish Cups, USSR Retro Table Decor, Hand Painted Red & Gold

A charming set of three small vintage Soviet “Carp Family” fish, featuring the iconic white, red and gold decoration associated with one of the most recognizable Soviet-era ceramic drinking-set designs.

These three little fish are part of the classic fish-shaped drinking sets that became extremely popular across the Soviet Union. Complete sets traditionally consisted of a larger carp-shaped decanter accompanied by several smaller fish-shaped drinking cups.

Each piece has a distinctive sculptural fish form with a white glazed surface, vivid red painted details, delicate gold decoration and expressive hand-painted features. The three fish look wonderful displayed together and make a particularly fun addition to a vintage porcelain or ceramic collection.

A little history
The famous fish-shaped drinking-set design has an interesting Ukrainian and Soviet history.
Similar sets were produced in several factories during the Soviet period. In Ukraine, two of the major producers associated with this type of fish set were the Polonne Artistic Ceramics Factory in Polonne, Khmelnytskyi region, and the Horodnytsia Porcelain Factory in Horodnytsia, Zhytomyr region.

According to historical accounts, in 1962 Ukrainian artist Mykola Bobyk adapted an earlier Riga fish-decanter design at the Polonne Artistic Ceramics Factory, enlarging the form and helping establish the design as a mass-produced Ukrainian version.

The original fish-shaped decanter design is associated with the Riga Porcelain Factory in Latvia, where Georgian artist Abessalom Baramidze created the original form in the early 1950s. Similar versions were subsequently produced by other porcelain and ceramic factories across the USSR.

Because these three pieces do not have a visible factory mark that would allow their exact origin to be confirmed, I am not assigning them to a particular factory. They are offered as vintage Soviet-era examples of the famous Carp Family / fish drinking-set tradition.

Condition
Vintage used condition with signs of age and previous use.
The gold and painted decoration shows some natural age-related wear, and there may be minor surface marks consistent with the age of these pieces.

Display & Collecting
These little fish are wonderful displayed as a group in a vintage glass cabinet, china cabinet, kitchen, dining room, bar area or eclectic interior.

They would make a fun addition to a collection of Soviet ceramics, Ukrainian vintage tableware, retro barware, fish-shaped ceramics or unusual mid-century decorative objects.

Please note that this listing is for three small fish only. The larger fish-shaped decanter shown in examples of the traditional set is not included.
